Family Medicine Associates has been using a computerized electronic medical record (EMR) system since 2002. We chose to do so because it provides the most complete and comprehensive recordkeeping available and also provides all FMA health care providers with immediate access to our patients’ information.
Since their inception, EMRs have evolved to also allow health care providers to better track patients’ progress with different conditions, and to integrate lab and x-ray data. They prompt us to provide more appropriate and thorough care. They enable us to communicate better within our office as well as with outside health care providers to coordinate care. They can also help us to analyze how we are doing in taking care of all our patients with many different conditions so that we can always work at improving what we do.
In 2015 we moved to Epic, a new EMR system that has all the latest advanced capabilities. All FMA providers and Lahey providers on Epic are connected through one system, which means:
- Better coordination of your care.
- More convenient scheduling of appointments.
- Online refill requests, referral requests and test results as soon as they become available.
- Access to your health information 24 hours a day, seven days a week through the patient portal.
A secure patient portal – My FMA Chart – enables our patients direct access to their data within our system and improves our communication with them.
Epic also pulls together registration, scheduling, billing, insurance information and electronic medical records all in one secure, unified information technology system.
